Georgia Set to Launch High-Tech Identity Cards with Advanced Security Upgrades!

The Minister of Justice of Georgia, Anri Okhanashvili, has announced a major update to the country’s identification documents. According to the minister’s order dated March 10, the visual design of Georgian citizen identity cards, temporary and permanent residence permits, and temporary electronic identification certificates will undergo significant changes.

Implementation Timeline

As per the official document, the new changes will take effect from June 4, 2025. However, identity documents issued before this date will remain valid for the legally defined period, meaning individuals holding older versions of these documents do not need to replace them immediately.

Key Design and Security Updates

The updated identity cards and residence permits will include several enhancements, particularly aimed at improving security and authentication. Some of the most notable changes include:

  • State Emblems and National Symbols: The new identity documents will feature the full version of the Georgian state emblem in a single color along with the Georgian national flag.
  • Advanced Security Features: The background design will be structured in a way that prevents counterfeiting by making it difficult to manipulate key elements. This will help authorities detect fraudulent modifications more easily.
  • Comprehensive Personal Data Inclusion: The new identity cards will contain essential information such as:
    • Full Name
    • Gender
    • Citizenship
    • Date and Place of Birth
    • Personal Identification Number
    • Photograph
    • Specimen Signature
    • Issuing Authority
    • Date of Issue and Expiration Date

Digital Security Features

To enhance the integrity of official documents, the new identity cards will also incorporate electronic security elements, including:

  • Authentication Certificate: This will confirm the cardholder’s identity and include a private key and certification authority.
  • Qualified Electronic Signature: The document will feature a digital signature, along with a corresponding private key and issuing authority details.
  • Card Access Number (CAN): A unique security code to regulate access to the document’s digital information.
  • QR Code Verification: The inclusion of a QR code will allow for quick verification of personal details and document validity, making the authentication process more efficient.

Why These Changes Matter

The decision to revamp Georgia’s identity documents reflects the country’s commitment to modernizing its public administration system and aligning with global security standards.

With the rise of digital identity fraud and document forgery, these improvements will ensure greater protection for citizens’ personal data and enhance trust in official documentation.

Furthermore, the integration of digital security measures will streamline administrative procedures for both citizens and government institutions, making identity verification faster and more reliable.

As the June 2025 implementation date approaches, Georgian authorities are expected to provide further updates on the transition process for new applicants and those seeking document renewals.
