Against the backdrop of news about the possible visa-free regime for the Republic of Armenia with the Schengen countries, Armenian citizenship is becoming more and more popular. According to statistics provided by Jam News, more than 16000 applications for Armenian citizenship were received in 2024. One of the available options for acquiring citizenship is to obtain citizenship by roots.
In accordance with Part 3 of Article 13 of the Law of the Republic of Armenia "On Citizenship of the Republic of Armenia" of November 6, 1995, any person who has reached the age of 18 and is of Armenian origin by nationality has the right to acquire citizenship. At the same time, the person must confirm not only his nationality, but also belonging to the Armenian nationality of one of the parents. You do not need to take an exam on knowledge of language, culture or law. The term of military service is 2 years.
Waiting time: 4 to 6 months.

- Birth certificate indicating nationality;
- Certificate of marriage of parents;
- Birth certificate of the parent of Armenian nationality;
- Parents' passports;

- Receipt of payment of the state fee;

Importantly
On February 12, 2024, amendments to the Law of the Republic of Armenia "On Military Service and the Status of a Serviceman" entered into force, according to which naturalized citizens, males aged 27 to 37 are subject to compulsory military service. If a person has directly completed military service in the country of his first citizenship and has a military ID, it is not necessary to perform military service in the Armenian Armed Forces. If a person has not undergone direct military service, but at the same time has a military ID, it will be necessary to undergo military service in the Armenian Armed Forces.
Example of Applying for Citizenship
In January 2025, two clients of Russian citizens permanently residing in Georgia submitted applications for Armenian citizenship to the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia in Tbilisi. At the same time, a notarized copy of the documents was certified and translated into Armenian. The appointment took place by phone and the waiting period before submission was 1 month. The documents were submitted on the same day and a month later the embassy handed them over to the migration office of Armenia in Yerevan.
Tax Residency
In accordance with Article 25 of the Tax Code of the Republic of Armenia, the following are recognized as tax residents:
- Natural persons staying in the territory of the Republic of Armenia for more than 183 days in a calendar year;
- Individuals whose vital interests are located in the territory of the Republic of Armenia (in particular, home or other place of residence, family, main place of professional or other activity).
